The weekend of September 21st and 22nd, Saint-Emilion welcomes you to share with you the European Heritage Days.

 

This 2019 edition will focus on the theme "Arts and Entertainment".

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 21ST

 

The Monolithic Church: Free and open access from 10:00 am to 10:30 pm


The monolithic church is an underground religious building dug at the beginning of the 12th century in impressive proportions. A treasure hunt will be given to the children at the entrance of the church. More information >

 

 

From 10am to 6pm - Wine Saturdays 

Discover the mysteries of Saint-Émilion wines during a day with a visit to the medieval city, an introduction to wine tasting at the Maison du Vin de Saint-Émilion School, lunch in the Ô 3 Fontaines wine bar and discovery of a wine estate where you will meet a winemaker who will reveal the secrets of his vineyard and his wine. Historian David Souny will introduce you to the medieval city of Saint-Émilion and its evolution from the beginning: from the arrival of the monk Emilion in the 8th century to the extraction of limestone and the installation of the various religious congregations in and around the city.

At 2:00pm - The Collegiate Church and its cloister: the canons of Saint-Émilion

Historian David Souny will present the history of the Canons of Saint-Émilion. This religious community, which was established in the collegiate church and its cloister between the 12th and 18th centuries, followed the rule of Saint Augustine and embodied the official religious institution. Delegates of the Archbishop of Bordeaux, they ensured that the proper functioning of religious life in Saint-Emilion was respected. The size of the site therefore reflects the importance of this community and its desire to mark its preponderance.

From small paths to viewpoints around Saint-Émilion, your guide will take you to Château Franc Mayne to discover a vineyard "from the inside". From 6:30pm to 11:00pm - Games & musical entertainment

On the occasion of the Heritage Night, you can discover many musical and cultural activities in the historic city:

  • medieval games and Animavigne games by Lou Béret: Cloister of the collegiate church
  • Gabrielle Alya, singer: rue de la petite fontaine
  • "jazz quartet", musical group: rue de la grande fontaine
  • and other surprises: Place de l'Église Monolithe, Place Bouqueyre etc...

 

At 8:30pm - Citizen Rally - Town Hall Gardens

Citizen rally in the Town Hall Gardens, with a speech by Mr. Le Maire, led by the Jazz workshop of the Saint-Émilion Municipal Music School.

 

At 8:30pm - Wine of honour in the Town Hall Gardens

Bernard LAURET - Mayor of Saint-Émilion, the City Council, are pleased to invite you to the 36th European Heritage Days on the theme "Art and Entertainment".

 

At 8:15pm- Torchlight procession of the Jurade

Follow the torchlight procession of the Jurade which will run through the city from Place Bouqueyre to the King's Keep.

 

At 10:45pm - Presentation of the Jurade - Tour du Roy

By its presence at the Tour du Roy, the "Jurade de Saint-Émilion" will remind us that wine is an object of culture and sharing.

 

At 11:00pm - Great sound and light show

Extend your visit to Saint-Émilion to attend the magnificent sound and light show shot from the Tour du Roy, which will share the "art" of pyrotechnics.

 

Family Games in the Lamprey Garden

Want to share a friendly moment with your family in a green setting? Our collaborative game cases will make you discover while playing with the Dordogne, its fauna and flora: let's draw together", times'up "Lamproie hurry up"...  For amateurs, our petanque and mölki ground will be the scene of lively games! Kamishibaï - Japanese Theatre at the Lamprey Garden

This weekend, come and discover the kamishibaï, a travelling Japanese theatre where artists tell stories by scrolling through illustrations in front of the audience. At the Jardin de la Lamproie, it is Carole, animator of the libraries of the Grand Saint-Émilionnais, who will introduce this narrative art with the following stories: Under my feet, The apple and the hedgehog, circus maximus, The little golden fish, A very successful picnic, A seed as well as The Bremen musicians.

 

Good to know:
In case of rain or bad weather, a closed room will be able to accommodate all the activities offered at the Jardin de la Lamproie on September 21st and 22nd.

 

Saint-Alexis Church of Sainte-Terre

The 11th century Saint-Alexis de Sainte-Terre church, in Romanesque and Gothic style, has been registered as a Historic Monument since 1925. Special opening on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 September between 14h and 18h30

The BAN DES VENDANGES

After a long year of working the vines, it is time for the harvest and festivities! The Jurade of Saint-Émilion will gather once again to celebrate the Ban des Vendanges on Sunday 22nd September 2019. Many guests will be in attendance and some will be inducted to become ambassadors for Saint-Émilion wines. More information >

 

WHAT IS LA JURADE?
While Aquitaine has been under English rule since 1152, the charter signed by Jean sans Terre in 1199 gives Saint-Émilion administrative, judicial and financial autonomy; then to its Jurisdiction with the creation of the Jurade. Dissolved during the French Revolution, it was reconstituted in 1948 by a few winegrowers in its current form of a brotherhood whose vocation is to promote the wines of Saint-Émilion and its satellites throughout the world.

 

At 10:00am - solemn Mass at the Collegiate Church

On the occasion of the Ban des Vendanges, the traditional Jurade Mass will launch the festivities on Sunday 22nd September.

La Jurade has more than 3,000 members, ambassadors of Saint-Émilion wines throughout the world. They become members at induction ceremonies.

At 5:00pm - Proclamation of the Ban des Vendanges

After a parade in the village dressed in their traditional red dress, the jurats will proclaim the Ban des Vendanges from the top of the King's Keep.
