An exceptional theatrical production based on Victor Hugo’s "La Légende des Siècles": "Dante’s Vision", performed by Éric Sanson.
To be seen at the Château de Montaigne on Saturdays 25 July, 1 August, 8 August, 22 August, 29 August and 5 September 2026 at 6.30 pm.
Victor Hugo, a 19th-century writer, poet and playwright, is one of the most iconic figures in French literature. He single-handedly embodies the grandeur of Romantic literature and the power of humanist ideals. A man of passion, rebellion and generosity, and a committed intellectual, he spoke out throughout his life to defend the most vulnerable and denounce social injustices.
"Dante’s Vision", a grandiose, Dantesque masterpiece by Victor Hugo, is a skilful blend of the various sources of inspiration that constitute his genius: the epic, the lyrical, the satirical and what has been termed his ‘apocalyptic’ inspiration. It is a powerful expression of our own human condition: a ceaseless struggle against adversity, contradiction, despotism, abandonment and weak-mindedness; for, as he so beautifully put it: ‘The sublime lies below’!
Éric Sanson is dedicated to socially conscious theater and brings to life legendary figures from literature, including Montaigne, Pilate, Cyrano, Don Quixote, Gauguin, Casanova, and others. He brings “Dante’s Vision” to life and, as naturally as friends share a meal together, transports us into Dante’s world through the work of Victor Hugo.
