The first French car was created in Le Mans in 1873 by Amédée Bollée, a bell founder; his children continued his work. The first motor race recognised as world-class was the Grand Prix de l'Automobile-Club de France, held in Le Mans in 1906 and organised by the newly formed Automobile-Club de la Sarthe, created especially for the occasion. With such a history, the advent of the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1923 was entirely justified. The pre-war period was fertile in terms of technical innovations in motor racing. The post-war period was just as fruitful, with the scale of the event continuing to grow, and today it has become a global event with a loyal following.
Hervé Guyomard, originally from Brittany, studied humanities at the Lycée d'État du Mans and went on to higher education, while also pursuing his passion for motor racing.
